This interactive one hour workshop introduces children to the importance of China and its contribution to the world. They learn to say ‘hello, my name is…’ , thank you and count from 1 to 5. Pictures illustrate the Chinese sounds through associations with English while memory is reinforced through a song. The vocabulary is recorded as a sound file that the school can keep to review the session. The basic workshop can be adapted to suit the needs of the school. Liz has worked with Foundation Stage children, KS1 and KS2, and delivered assemblies to start a day of workshops across the school.

Adult short course
This practical 8 lesson course builds confident basic communication and understanding, and enables participants to become comfortable with unfamiliar sounds and script. Cultural aspects of every day life are taught alongside the relevant language, which includes introductions and names, bargaining using Chinese money and identifying key foods on a menu to order a meal. The lessons are ideal training for a visit to China or for hosting a Chinese delegation. A more detailed course outline is available on request and all hand-outs are provided so that further purchase of text books is not required.
Secondary schools
ChinaTalk offers a lively onehourworkshop with participation throughout. Students learn ‘how are you?’, count from 1 to 5 including characters and practise recognition of the four tones. They are introduced to pinyin romanisation, learn to say ‘thank you’, and are given examples of cultural etiquette that they are likely to encounter if hosting Chinese visitors or visiting China themselves. There is also an overview of the main Chinese festivals and a game to practise using chopsticks.
The adult short course (look right!) has been adapted and delivered in three High Schools for Y8, Y9 and Y10.
Testimonials
“I learnt Chinese with ChinaTalk for almost a year. The workshops are both practical and enjoyable and a great introduction to learning Chinese. Highly recommended!” Steve Douglass, now living in China
