Our new website launch coincided with this year’s Mid Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day (full moon) of the 8th month in the Chinese traditional lunar calendar. I attended an event at Newcastle University, organised by UK Trade and Investment and the Newcastle Confucius Institute. It was really fantastic to hear good Chinese spoken by students of the East Asian Studies Department.
It was also the first time I have ever enjoyed eating moon cakes. This modern take on the moon cake most popular in Hong Kong (see photo) is covered in rice dough, and filled with sweet bean or sesame paste. For English tastes, they are much more palatable than the traditional sour-mince-pie-with-egg like filling covered in a pork-pie type pastry.
